South City Masters Newsletter - August 2018

Hi all

Here’s what we covered in this weekend’s committee meeting.

Our booking for Monday evening extended swimming hours has been discontinued. Very few swimmers were using the time and Lloyd Elsmore management found it difficult explaining to others that it was not available.

Membership renewals are coming in, but there are still quite a few to pay and fill in their personal / emergency contact forms. There will be some forms at training for those who missed the email.

Some time in the next month Avy will give another skill session, this time on dives. Talk to her if you’re interested.

Deryn succeeding in breaking two of the three Breaststroke records she was targeting at the South Island Short Course Champs. 55-59 yrs 100 m Breaststroke 1:32.12 and 200 m Breaststroke 3:20.83. Well done her!

Dave Donaldson used to send texts to a group of interested swimmers informing them of time and place of his next swim so they could swim as a group. However, he has moved away from the area, so we discussed ways of continuing something similar. Tony will talk to Dave about the best way to do this.

Rochelle is planning a quiz night for November. Watch this space.

We’re trying to source a new batch of South City Masters swim caps, as we’re running low.

Best regards

South City Masters Newsletter

Hi all

Here’s the first of a regular newsletter from your committee. We plan to send one after each committee meeting (every six weeks or so) to keep you all ‘in the loop’.

This Wednesday we have a relay race night. There will be four lanes for relay racing and three for those who prefer to train their own programme.

Remember to sign up for our Annual Awards Dinner on 4th August at Nana Thai, Botany Junction. $15 for members, $30 for non-members. There is a sign-up sheet poolside.

On Sunday 15th July, Avy will run a skills session on turns. She plans a 30-minute session in lane 7 (& perhaps lane 6) from 8:30 am.

Manukau Masters are running a Skins event on Saturday 28th July. These are a fun knock-out event where swimmers race a series of 25 m sprints with the slowest one being knocked out until there is only one left. It’s great watching, as well. There are entry forms poolside.

The Ocean Swim Series dates have been published. https://oceanswim.co.nz/ The first one is the Bay of Islands Classic on 1st December.

Membership fees are due, so I’ll send an email with the various payment options in the next few days.

Finally, next Sunday HPK Swim Club have their annual Honda Swim Meet, so we will probably swim at Pakuranga College. This is still to be confirmed, so watch your emails for confirmation.

Let any of the committee (below) know what you think of this newsletter so we can improve it as we go.

Best regards

Freestyle Coaching Clinic Coming to You

Does your freestyle need a bit of a tune up? Does it need a complete overhaul?

We will be running a freestyle clinic during the Monday swim session over 4 weeks. The clinic is FREE. The sessions will take the entire 1 hour and will be comprehensive and progressive. The weeks are not consecutive though; the first week is 19th March and weeks 2 to 4 are 9th, 16th and 23rd April.

Here is how the clinic will look:

Week 1 (19th March). This first session covers the fundamentals of body positioning and kick
Week 2 (9th April). Session 2 involves learning body rotation (why and how). How arms should recover over the water will be covered too.
Week 3 (16th April). In session 3 we discover how to pull more efficiently under the water. Better pulling will provide more power and speed. That's enough for one session.
Week 4 (23rd April). This is the final session and it's about breathing and timing, the 2 things many swimmers really struggle with.

There will be a sign up sheet at the pool Monday and Wednesday. Please put your name on it if you are coming to the clinic. This will greatly assist us to plan how many lanes we need and how to shuffle the remaining lanes on these nights.

Gentle Reminder

Hi folks. Just a gentle reminder of our relay challenge on Wednesday. It will be a fun challenge but you will also get to swim more than the usual number of lengths for a relay night and you should be pretty tired when you are done, unless you didn't swim hard enough.

So be there, or miss out on the fun.
